Survivor comment update: the Big Lie
(Posted on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 at 11:35 a.m.)

Last Thursday's episode of Survivor wasn't aired because of a billiards event aired on that very same channel. So I watched the Sunday primetime telecast.

Everybody expected a big lie! The beginning of the episode told us that something was afoot. Sandra warned the others that Johnny Fairplay is not playing fair anymore. And then in the morning, the whole Balboa tribe accused Christa of throwing away their fish (actually it was Sandra because of what happened to Rupert Hagrid). But she looked like she is guilty when she sobbed.
Later in the big lie came — and everybody fell for it. When Jon asked his friend Dan about Jon's grandma, his friend said she was dead. Everybody took pity and handed the reward to him. Turns out it was a big joke; Grandma's alive and well, and all was a big scam that actually worked. And everybody do not know about it.
Later in the anagram immunity challenge. Burton won immunity — for only a minute, until Jeff spotted Burton's mistake just as everybody was leaving. It became an all-woman clincher where Darrah eventually became the winner.
But Darrah being immune doesn't mean the other ex-Morgans are safe. Day 31 is Tijuana's birthday. The Balboas' advanced present: a trip back to reality — and out of the game. Looks like she'll be celebrating her birthday in her a nice new dress rather than in her tattered clothes.
But at this point everybody still believes Jon's grandma is "dead." Let's hope somebody will expose his lie and finally bring him down... somehow.

Survivor comment update; What A Wonderful World
(Posted on Monday, November 24, 2003 at 04:20 p.m.)

Last Friday's episode of Survivor became an episode of mourning for Hagrid Rupert fans.

Since last episode, Burton seemed bent on pulling Rupert out of the game. He said he was too much of a threat, he said. He got the support of the ex-Morgans and Johnny Fairplay to put him out.
Step one is to deprive Rupert of the reward that Burton and Lil won (Burton gave his share to Jon). The plot thicken as step two was set: deprive the fat guy of immunity. Burton succeeded in that. Step three: the Balboa tribe would bite the hand that fed them, like the snake ate the iguana while they were planning. And they successfully put our guy into the jury.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Question now is how will the Balboa tribe survive without its breadwinner for the rest of the game.
I heard Rupert is missing and cannot be reached. Is he in that All-Star thing many fans are talking about? Who knows where our fat guy is.

Every anime fan knows that a version of Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful World was used in Vandread. So I became curious when a rock version of Satchmo's classic was played in end of Game Six in the Major League Baseball World Series. I wanted to know who sang it. One blog (I forgot the name) gave me the answer, which the writer also searched: the late rocker Joey Ramone. I've downloaded the mp3 and I enjoyed it. I'll be put in CD once I found it again possibily in the future (my blog doesn't have a CD writer so I have depend on someone else.)

Survivor comment update
(Posted on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at 05:57 p.m.)

On last Friday's episode of Survivor the Burton caught a stingray and got electrecuted. But the Balboas still had it for lunch, something that they would need in their next reward challenge. Rupert won a breakfast, but (for the first time) he ditched it and gave them to Burton and Lil.
The next morning there was already talk to pull out Rupert. Lil and Burton talked about it while they ate breakfast. Christa and Sandra talked about the same thing while ridding their hair of ticks. But plans failed later on when in the immunity challenge, Rupert won again.
So the Balboas did the next best thing: vote out the Savage henchman Ryno! (a.k.a. Macho Ryan O. *makes rhino sounds*) even Tijuana and Darrah turned their backs on him!
What will happen next week. Will the very abhorred Jonny Fairplay be kicked out? We'll just see!

Survivor comment update
(Posted on Monday, November 10, 2003 at 05:37 p.m.)

Last Friday's episode of Survivor started with the Outcasts voting for two Survivors to go back into the game to take Shawn and quitter Osten's places. The votes came in.
Guess what? My prediction is right. Burton and Lil were not only resurrected in the game, they would return to the tribes that kicked them out. So they automatically gained immunity as a result of their resurrection.
Of course, by the time those two "zombies" came back to their camps, things against them were quickly patched up in both Drake and Morgan. But when the tribes thought everything is over with, another surprise was thrown in front of them. The merge finally happened on Day 21 with the new tribe given black buffs (first time that color was used).
In the immunity challenge that followed Burton and Hagrid Rupert were neck-in-neck, until Burton won the immunity sheath by a hair. But he won something he already had, so he would give it something else on Tribal Council.
The Drakes and Morgans decided to name the new tribe Balboa. Although it was named after Rupert's dead snake, that reptile bears the name of a great Spanish conquistador, Vasco Núńez de Balboa, discoverer of the Pearl Islands. They would stay on Drake Island because conditions are better there.
While they feasted, the Morgans were planning to put Jonny Fairplay out of the game, but Lil thought otherwise and sided with the Drakes to vote off Savage Andrew.

Anime Survivor All-Stars: The Marquesean Mermaid Experience may be over in my part of my mind, I may not let go of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch anytime soon (maybe until the series is finished in Japan and reach overseas). But for now, I had to do other things — including Anime Knights (the male version of Anime Diva) and the application of my new job.

Survivor comment update
(Posted on Tuesday, November 4, 2003 at 11:12 a.m.)

In last Friday's episode of Survivor was an appropriate one for Halloween.
When the Drakes went home from Tribal Council, Rupert argued with Jon just because he voted against our Hagrid. Though it was later settled, Hagrid Rupert called Johnny "Fairplay" Johnny "Pain-in-the-Ass." Jon's problem now is with Shawn.
Meanwhile, the Morgans were getting drained by the second. They can't even catch fish! And they would do everything just to stay alive.
On day 19 or 20 (normally) there should be a merge. But on day 19, the tribes were sent another challenge. When they got there, the Drakes and Morgans were given the shock of their lives. Nicole, Skinny Ryan, Lil, Burton, Michelle, and Trish came back as the Outcasts, out for revenge and they got it. Drake would lose one, Morgan would lose one, and two Outcasts will return to the game.
The Drakes decided that'll be either be Jon or Shawn. They stated their case. But in the end, Shawn walked the plank. Meanwhile, Jeff Probst was surprised that Osten decided to quit. When he said it the first time, the Morgans thought it was a joke (which is why they ignored him by voting out Skinny Ryan). But this becomes real, and the Morgans had no choice to let him go. Although Osten is not the first to leave without any votes cast (back in the Australian Outback, Michael left the game without any votes casted because of his burns), but he is certainly the first one to say the words "I quit."
But which two Outcasts will come back and what happens next will be anybody's guess. But I want both Burton and Lil back so the Drakes who voted him will feel his wrath, and Morgans would really appreciate what her badges are made of.

Survivor and anime picture books
(Posted on Saturday, October 25, 2003 at 05:45 p.m.)

In last Friday's episode of Survivor, The Drakes were keen on getting back on track. It seemed shaky at first when Jon and Shawn had arguments about the shelter. Shame Shawn. But in the Reward Challenge, the Drakes were at the right as they won their first challenge in days. Because of that, they not only feasted on lobsters and fish, but also on steaks. Jon even became confident that they would win the Immunity Challenge (after looting and blackmailing the Morgans).
But it won't be the case, as the Morgans outsmarted the Drakes by putting the weight first on Rupert, wearing him down. The Morgans would later win immunity, sending Drake to Tribal Council for a third straight time. (In fact, a 6-4 merge never ever occured in Survivor.)
Hagrid Rupert lost all of his jollyness, thinking he would be next. Luckily, it was Trish who was booted out.
Teasers for next episode showed that Drake and Morgan may not be merged yet. But we'll never know as in reality, Survivor is very unpredictable (like what happened to Sook Jai and Chuay Gahn in the Thailand). What is certain is what Jeff said to the tribes: "Your past may come back to haunt you." What could that past be? Nicole, Skinny Ryan, Lil, Burton, Michelle, and Trish will be baaaaaaaaack! Just watch out for it next time.

Last Friday, I got very special surprise from my sister back in Japan. They're manga! Or should we say, picture book manga. These are special anime version picture books are were the requests I made to her as a souvenir. I was expecting actual manga, but these are better nonetheless (and very colorful, too). Here are the titles I had: There are pictures of these, so click on the links above to see them for yourself.

Survivor comment update; Spirited Away
(Posted on Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at 03:23 p.m.)

In last Friday's episode of Survivor, it seemed that Hagrid Rupert is started to be loved by his captors, the Morgan. So loved that his own tribemates back in Drake Island were worried about what he is doing.
But there is a saying that everything goes back to the source. So even though he helped Morgan win their first reward challenge, he decided to go home to Drake. Are those fears Drake had about Rupert giving away their tribe's secrets to the enemy? I don't know, but he proved to be an asset for both Drake and Morgan tribes.
Later, when the Drakes knew that the next immunity challenge was an eating challenge, they planned to have Michelle pretend to cough her food so the Morgans would choose her and let her reveal her true colors. Unfortunately, she's also the reason why Drake's plan backfired. She showed her true colors head on, the Morgans chose Sandra instead. Drake eventually lost.
I think she really deserved being voted out on Tribal Council.
When I watched the live telecast last Friday, I was on the road. The reception, though snowy, was clear. However, I didn't catch the immunity challenge, so I watched the primetime telecast. But the problem was that Survivor's time spot on primetime (Sunday at 7 p. m.) coincides with two of my other favorites: Beyblade: V Force (with a cuteer Tyson) and Ripley's Believe It or Not (which was showing new episodes). I was completely torn. I hope that won't happen again!

X-------------------------------X

I've been promising this for months now, but my alter ego kept me from showing it in this blog. So here is the articles he wrote about the Oscar-winner Spirited Away. He made this as an project for his column-writing class in college. Here is the text (he wrote this, not me):
Nanami-chan and I were searching on our VCD library one day and come across our VCDs that were not yet been viewed. But we've come across a two-CD copy of the movie Spirited Away (literally, the Japanese title means "The Spiriting Away of Sen and Chihiro"). We were so intrigued by this cartoon directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Why such an anime?      I bought that VCD because of its recent plum: the Academy Award for Best Full-Length Animated Film. The category was presented since last year (when Shrek won that award), which makes Spirited Away the first anime movie nominated by such a prestigious prize. Nanami-chan and I never thought that any anime movie could be nominated for an Oscar, let alone win one.
It tells the story of a girl named Chihiro who, with her parents, stumbled to an abandoned "theme park" (or so they think) while trying to reach their new home. A spell was cast on her parents, turning them into pigs, and Chihiro must find a way to break it and hopefully get out of the spirit world before everything becomes too late. That way is to work on the spirit world's bath house (under the name "Sen"), and bring a step closer to the owner, who said to cast the spell on her parents.
Nanami-chan is aware that our copy was a bootleg one, enabling us to view almost "98%" of the film, resorting me to know the "remaining 2%" through the website Nausicaa.net. But much of the film is enough for me to analyze the whole picture.
The characterizations and the setting is very complex. There is only one protagonist; in this case, it is Chihiro/Sen. But there are no real antagonists. Obaba, the witch who turned her parents into swine, is absolutely evil, but still has a little bit of heart. Her twin sister, Zeniba, is initially evil, but later is actually a complete opposite of Obaba. The supporting characters also seem to be on both for and against Chihiro/Sen. Even Haku, the boy who always wanted to help her out of the spirit world, is described by Lin, Sen's co-worker, as Obaba's henchman and should "never be trusted."
Even the initial circumstances were confusing. The "theme park" seemed quiet and abandoned, but with freshly cooked food on display, and day turned into night in a matter of seconds (which signifies Obaba's presence).
But what makes this anime movie so good? Nanami-chan and I had a conversation about it.
"I noticed that this movie defies conventional Japanese-style animation," Nanami-chan explained, "Japanese-animation is supposed to be static. That's why it's cheap. But I noticed the motion of the characters in the movie is fluid. He (Miyazaki) must've put a lot of money into it."
I told her, "I heard the project costed Ą1.8B." Then I whistled.
"But what is the Academy's basis on choosing Spirited Away, honto ni wa? I heard Walt Disney Studios was involved in that project. Does this mean that the Academy only chooses animated movies by Disney and Dreamworks?"
Nanami-chan's point strikes me; this Miyazaki film's competitors for the same award are made by either Disney (Lilo and Stitch and Treasure Planet) or Dreamworks (Ice Age and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron). I tried to tell her that Walt Disney Studios only helped in Miyazaki's project, but it was his studio, Studio Ghibli, that made most of the work. But she didn't listen.
"The Academy should've open up a little bit, like what happened to Croching Tiger, Hidden Dragon."      "But Columbia Pictures was involved in that project. And so is Hero. And I'm sure that's not Zhang Ziyi's voice I heard in the English dub, girl. She can't even speak English!"
"Well, in that case Hollywood studios should be involved for a foreign film to be nominated in any major category."
I tried to tell her that what she said wasn't the case with Il Postino and La Vita E Bella (Life is Beautiful), but she shut the door and left.
Anyway, we both observed that Spirited Away has a very complicated and very psychological story line. The brief synopsis maybe simple enough, but as one goes along, he cannot hang on to what's really going on in the movie. But the story becomes clear as the movie progresses and the more confusing points are clarified later on. The story is just told in a subtle way that it creates the confusion effect that I mentioned earlier.
Though I can't tell you what they are, it seemed that Spirited Away was never shown here in the Philippines, so we many never know about it and why is it nominated for an Oscar. So it is OK for me if the copy of Spirited Away that I own is a bootleg copy. (Conrado de Quiros once said in his column that as long as one buys pirated VCDs of foreign movies, it is OK.)
Nanami-chan and I maybe biased on anime, but we think Spirited Away deserves its nomination and we would really appreciate it if it wins the Oscar. It's the fluidity of the artwork (which defies anime convention) and complexity and subtlety of the story that makes it deserving. But with equally good competitors on the same category (from the reviews), Miyazaki-sensei and his crew might as well pray in the face of this so-called uphill battle just to give the anime world its very first Oscar.
Anyway, we were happy that days after my alter ego submitted this work, Spirited Away did walk away with the Oscar. And we were so proud for Miyazaki-sensei. I hope more anime can do what this movie did.

I've been busy; Survivor comment update
(Posted on Wednesday, October 1, 2003 at 10:23 a.m.)

I have been busy this past week "hiding" the JPEG files in my two Yahoo Briefcases into zip files. Starting today, each Briefcase account would be split for those of Photos (JPEGs) and those for the other files. Those in Yahoo Photos will be a separate account, but I won't access the original files if I retain them. So I have to transfer the JPEGs in one account and all image files that I used in both AAT1 and AAT2 in another. (Forget those of the Akazukin Cha Cha files; the originals are still online in AAT website.) "Hiding" them is just one thing; returning them back to the Yahoo Briefcase account will be another thing. It would take longer.

Ever since I have my laptop repaired (and also what I mentioned earlier), I haven't written any proper blog entries as of late, especially my Survivor comment update. I'll try to make proper ones in the days/weeks ahead.

In last Friday's episode of Survivor (after Nicole was unceremoniously voted out) the Drake tribe still made progress while the Morgan tribe still struggled. This is evident in the Challenges.
When the Drakes won the Reward Challenge, Sandra proceeded to steal Morgan's tarp, which served as their shelter's roof. Now the Drake tribe are feeling like pirates looting Morgan's trade.
Our favorite, Hagrid Rupert (of Drake), freaked out when the blades of his spear were lost when Shawn used it. Luckily he found it; otherwise Hagrid will really be mad.
In the Immunity challenge, the Drakes were initially behind, but while the Morgans struggled in opening their bamboo shoot, the Drakes capitalized and eventually won immunity.
I thought Osten was the one being voted because he explicitly wanted to (after the incident with Sandra), but the entire Morgan tribe decided to vote out Ryan S. (a.k.a. "Skinny Ryan", as opposed to Ryan O. or "Macho Ryan") because (in the words of Anne Robinson), "You are the weakest link. Goodbye!"

It's Survivor meets Gilligan's Island. That's how Survivor: The Pearl Islands began. The game already started as soon as the Survivors flew in, and the clothes they were wearing were the only clothes they would were for the next 39 days.
As for the initial look at the survivors, they are composed of:
  • Three guys in expensive suits
  • Two guys named Ryan
  • A girl scout
  • Some women in dresses
  • A woman who speaks perfect Spanish
  • and... a Hagrid look-alike
... and I'm talking about Rupert, the survivor I'm rooting for.
I'll talk about last Friday's episode probably tomorrow.

Let's Get Together Now!
(Posted on Monday, September 15, 2003 at 10:29 a.m.)

If you still remember, I was still searching for the Korean lyrics of the World Cup Song Let's Get Together Now since last week. Those lyrics are elusive when using ordinary key words are concerned. I knew typing the word "lyrics" would not work (because it would lead to nowhere). So I typed the song title and a Hangul syllable. Not only did I get warmer in my search, I used other Korean words to point me to the elusive Korean lyrics.
Last Thursday, I finally found the elusive Korean lyrics in a certain Korean website, copied them to a Word document (along with the Japanese lyrics) and saved it. I went the extra mile and combined these lyrics based on how it was sung in the Korea/Japan version (I had the Korea/Japan version on CD).
I don't know any sites having lyrics to the Korea/Japan version of Let's Get Together Now, so I have this as an exclusive. It might be confusing with my romanization of the Korean lyrics, but I hope you can read it as smooth as the Japanese ones. Here they are:

Anime Diva
(Posted on Tuesday, September 9, 2003 at 10:21 a.m.)

Well, voting for Anime Diva came to an end last Sunday. Over a week after the supposed deadline of the vote was moved, the Rough 'n' Ready poll reached the prerequisite 150 votes (the Cute 'n' Cuddly polls reached 150 two days after the announcement of the extension and response was faster on that poll). Actually, the number of requisite votes to close the poll was 100 each. But when my invitation I posted to four other forums seemed to attract a sharp number of votes, I decided to up the ante. The voting was fast in a sense, but the Rough 'n' Ready votes came in slow. I'm glad this is over.
I called this part of my post an aftermath because for some of the fans, it is a shock their bet lost in the two months of voting. Here are the concussions:
The Cute 'n' Cuddly vote was more of a battle between Belldandy & Chii, which is much like the battle between Shao (a.k.a. Shugogetten Shaolin) and Sasami in the very same category in the 2001 Anime Diva. Chii initially had the lead in the beginning stages of the Anime Diva vote. Then, Project Zen, the forum where members gave the nominees suddenly went down. After I invited four other forums to join in the vote, Belldandy's votes had a sharp rise, but Chii fans try to get their act together to raise Chii's stakes of winning. This big race already left the other eight nominees in the cold.
Things suddenly turned after I announced the extension of voting. Bell's votes piled up. And no matter how much Chii's fans pull their girl's votes up, the goddess's votes still kept on coming and never went other way until the vote was closed.
When the news of Bell's sudden rise in votes reached some Chii fans, some expressed in disbelief, and some seem to express it now. I'll mention a couple of sore thumbs. Reyo Setta of the Anime Star Community Forums expressed it by pretending to cheat and transfer Bell's votes to Chii. While Kayin of the sake, bugs, and angels diner seemed to scream in disbelief. Others wondered how the goddess suddenly gained about 30 votes in just two days. But that's what the votes revealed in the Cute category.
On the other hand, the Rough 'n' Ready vote was a walk in the park for Eclair. The battle is clearly for second place because the attractive Kiddy Grade babe seemed to be unstoppable. TEAM_TENZAN2K seemed to be one of her obvious supporters. Others wanted another Mireille Bouquet to get past Eclair, but with no luck. This battle is very different from the last Anime Diva (in 2001) where Priss S. Asagiri and Aisha Clan-Clan almost fought tooth and nail (Priss eventually won).
As for my own bets — Sakura Kinomoto and Iria, — they lost, too.

In any battle, there are always winners and losers. But in the case of Anime Diva, the losers can never go for revenge; this year's nominees, as well as nominees from past Anime Divas, are exempted from future nominations. So expect a fresh new roster of nominees for Cute 'n' Cuddly and Rough 'n' Ready either next year or on 2005 (depending on my whim).

For those who want to know the full results, visit the Anime Diva web page at http://www.geocities.com/nanakami/animediva.

Onpu Starting last Monday, we finally met a new witch trainee named Onpu. A popular celebrity, she's actually of Majorca's camp (yes, like her rival Majorica, Majorca became a frog, too). But Doremi and the others treat her as a friend (Onpu treats also them as friends.)
But how will Doremi convince Onpu to jump over the fence will be another story that I may see sooner or later.
I'm just wonder why their clothes remain the same despite the changing seasons.

I went to the Survivor website. And surprise, surprise. The new line-up is introduced. And the tribes are named after some famous pirates: Drake and Morgan. Gonna research those names. Can't wait until September 19 (considering time zones)!

(I don't usually do this, but The Amazing Race 4 is already over. I can now do entries anytime!)

New edition + Anime Diva update; Brown Eyes music video up
(Posted on Thursday, August 28, 2003 at 10:37 a.m.)

Finally, my blog has slightly been changed to use a forest green background. I made a slight face lift after noticing that the scrollbar grew thinner as many entries were entered. If the number of entries reaches 16 or when the scrollbar (usually found at the right hand corner of the screen) is thin, that is the time that the current edition should be archived. At the same time, the blog interface should be altered so the blog appears new.
As I mentioned already, we are now at the forest green edition. The entries from the orange edition are now stored in the archives. Check them out if you have time.
(By the way, the text wrapping may vary depending on the screen size.)
